SMS 2010

Stop Making Sense (SMS) 2010

Situated on a woody peninsula in the small village of PetrĨane on the stunning Adriatic coast of Croatia, the first Stop Making Sense festival promises to entertain and thrill in equal measure.

More than a music/dance festival, this is a holiday in a beautiful spot with great value family run restaurants, villas by the beach to rent, and independently owned small hotels and campsites. You can even charter your own yacht and moor up right by the action!

With a stellar line up of DJS and bands playing across the dance musical spectrum (from jazz, folk and latin to house and techno via reggae, dubstep and electro), this is the perfect combination of sun, sea and entertainment. The music programme runs from noon to 6am every day and night: there is always something on to check out between a dip in the sea off the festival's very own private beach, a drink at the tiki bar or a bite at one of the many great value waterside restaurants nearby.

Brought to you by a like minded collective of club and concert promoters, the first Stop Making Sense event presents a broad selection of musical delights over 3 days and nights. We invite you to let go and party with us!

Axis 2010

AXIS 10
3rd-5th September '10

Encompassing DNA from all parts of the vivid exuberance that is India, Central India is a land deeply ingrained in the Indian culture and heritage. Its pinnacle, unquestionably, is Nagpur, the second capital of Maharashtra, well-endowed with respect to geography and the urban demograph, and home to both, the world-famous Nagpur orange and the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology.

VNIT, one of the premier institutes for engineering in India, undoubtedly bags the cream of intellectual talent from the region. In 2001, with a common motivation to showcase technical alacrity and the dire need for new ideas, AXIS, the technical festival of VNIT, was born. Originally christened Odyssey, the technical festival was soon renamed AXIS, to represent a much more active crusade against the lack of novelty and original thought applied to established technological norms, which threatens to impede any future human advancement. Since its inception in 2001, AXIS has never looked back. In the past seven years, AXIS has brought about a complete transformation in the technological dynamic of Central India, and that’s not to mention the strong competition it now give to the technical festivals of other such institutes of high calibre, thus living up to its motto ‘Revolutions start on an AXIS.’

NCRTDT 2010

The National conference on recent trends in database systems, rdbms and oodbms technologies is a conference on the present state of SQL and RDBMS Technologies and to ponder over the future state of SQL and RDBMS Technology. A strong opinion. from a group of researchers is emerging as "object-oriented databases are the next step in evolution of data management" and that "the relational data model is dying, because it is too limited and non-intutive for modern data needs".

It is also felt that "the industry is moving toward a more XML or object centric approach to data management" and hence there is "need for hierarchical, tree-structured, complex data types instead of just columns and rows...",etc. Moreover, with an RDBMS it is not possible to model the dynamic operations or rules that change the state of the data in the system because such things are beyond the scope of the database. With an OODBMS there is no disconnect between the database model and the application model because the entities are just other objects in the system.

But there are researchers who staunchly support SQL and RDBMS with arguments such as:
-SQL-based databases are flagship software products for the three largest software vendors in the world: Microsoft, Oracle and IBM
-RDBMS systems are headed into main memory which changes the playing field altogether
-john Ousterhout and his co-authors outline a compelling argument for RAMCloud

And, that "new functionalities such as CASE statements, outer joins, and nested table expressions have increased the number of tasks one can perform using SQL alone. But these features are alone not the end of how SQL will adapt to change...."

Which is true? Is it the end of SQL and Relational Databases? Or is it just a hasty and myopic conclusion? State your opinions with supporting arguments, references, documents, data, etc.

We welcome your original contributions on the following topics, but not limited to:

- Database Management Systems and Technologies

- Relational Database Management Systems Technologies

- Object Oriented Database Management Systems Technologies

- Future of Database Technologies, etc.
